Domaining

For a while now I’ve been considering moving my website to a domain that was less generic than good ol’ dot com. So recently I did! The new domain is www.steffanharries.me.uk. The dot me dot uk domain is aimed at personal websites to those of us who reside in the UK. That pretty much perfectly fits my uses and target audience of my website so I think that made a lot of sense for me.

My blog used to reside at blog.steffanharries.com, this now redirects via a 301 rule to steffanharries.me.uk/blog/. I’ve also created analytics, webmaster tools and email accounts using Google Apps that match my old dot com domain too and setup mail forwarding from the old ones. This is all nice and lovely however it leaves me with a few things left to consider.

I need to decide wether or not I need to keep the old dot com domain and subdomains alive. I’m happy to let the old email accounts die, however I haven’t yet decided weather to purchase blog.steffanharries.me.uk or not yet. The dot com domain and subdomains have several months left so that should leave more than enough time for search engines to recrawl the site and discover the 301 redirects. I’m mainly talking about the aesthetics here of having the blog on a subdomain or as a tailing folder. Perhaps I’m just being picky!

Whatever I decide I’ll post again with my reasons why.

PS. This post was written entirely on my Android tablet. An Asus Eeepad Transformer with keyboard dock. It’s a beatiful device and I encourage anyone looking to buy a tablet to take a look at this device. I’ll be using it exclusively for taking lecture notes in my final year at Aberystwyth University instead of carrying a laptop around for the portability and battery life.

This just a brief post to remind myself how to blog and that I need to write more often. For one thing weirdly find writing blog posts relaxing! So a few quick updates:

I need to do the following:
- Blog more often on web design, development and photography
- Edit and upload photos to Flickr from the last few weeks of events
- Tweak this blog theme more and add it to Git
- Re-structure my main website content and create pages for specific items
- Upgrade PHP to 5.3 on the VPS after checking for dependencies

Penrhiw Banger Racing

A friend and I recently went along to a banger racing event near Aberaeron in mid Wales and asked the officials there if they minded us taking photos…to our surprise they welcomed us with open arms and treated us like long lost brothers! They got us to sign in as race officials, gave us high-viz vests and said “Go where you like, just don’t get run over”! So here’s a few shots I took I’m happy with

Bluebell Forest

These photos were taken at Penglais woods in Aberystwyth this afternoon where the bluebells are in full bloom. These protected flowers are absolutely beautiful and litter the forest floor and they are a joy to photograph. I’m hoping to plan another trip to the Penglais woods soon too because it’s a beautiful place to see even if you’re not interested in photography! RNLI Kinsale to Aberystwyth Lifeboat Rib Run

Last week the good men and women held a rib run from Kinsale in southern Ireland to Aberystwyth in mid Wales, which considering the distance is a fair old distance to cover! You can find out more about the Kinsale to Aberystwyth Rib Run on their website. I took photos of the boats as they arrived in Aberystwyth, and gave them all to the RNLI, and I’ve included a couple of them below

Focus on Imaging 2010

Focus on Imaging is the largest photograph exhibition of it’s kind in the UK, almost every manufacturer, dearlership and traders will be there showing off their new tools of the trade at discount prices! You really can get some bargains at Focus and I managed to bag myself a flash umbrella kit for only £25!! Here’s some photos from the show and I’ll upload some more taken with the new umbrella kit soon

Bring On The Girls!

Had some fun the other day with fellow photographer Si Moore where we used our girlfriends for some portraiture experiments! He got a softbox for Christmas and wanted to have some fun playing with it. I’m not going to go into a great deal about the image setups because they were all very similar. We used a Canon 430 EXII through softbox from camera left @ 1/4 manual and another Canon 430 EX with Stoffen diffuser from camera right @ 1/16 manual.

I’ve only been an official photographer at four weddings over the last two years but I think I’ve come a long way in terms of moving from just getting the necessary shots and anything else available to getting the necessary shots and anything else the client is after as well as maybe throwing in some candids.
